Simple steps pet parents can take to protect their pets against ticks

It is quite easy for pets to become infected with ticks. It is not hard for these ticks to attach themselves to pets while they are walking in the park or on a play date with friends. These parasites can cause a host of health problems so pet parents need to be vigilant. The following diseases may be contracted through tick bites: Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, and Hepatitis B. There are no vaccines available for tick-borne diseases, and treatment is quite costly.

However, you can protect your pets from ticks in a few ways. A few of them are as follows:

Check for ticks

As a part of your pet's daily grooming routine, make sure you check them for ticks. You can do this by running your fingers through your pet's fur. As you do so, pay attention to any bumps around the ears, eyelids, toes, legs, abdomen, and below the collar. Ticks are typically black or brown in color. They tend to be small like poppy seeds at first, but they grow larger as time goes on. Do not delay taking your pet to the veterinarian if you suspect that he/she has ticks. You will need to have them removed by a trained expertIf necessary, the vet will prescribe medications.

Symptoms of tick bites

Tick bites are usually accompanied by vomiting, changes in voice or barking, lack of coordination in the hind legs, breathing issues, and lethargy. It is also possible for a tick bite to cause fever, which if left untreated can lead to serious health problems.

Where ticks live

Ticks like to seek refuge in wooded areas, gardens, and parks. You can also find them indoors in kennels and daycare centers. It is important for pet parents to monitor where their pet spends his/her day. Do not spend too much time in places heavily infested with ticks. After a walk or outdoor play, pet parents should check their pets for ticks once they return home.

Protect your outdoors

Pay attention to places in and around your house that might be hiding ticks. If you have a garden, overgrown grass can harbour the pests. Keep the grass trimmed and weeded regularly to keep the pests away. You can also use an outdoor tick spray to keep them away.
