There is no doubt that relocating a pet is not an easy thing to do. Getting all the paperwork and paying the expenses are not easy to do. A pet transportation company called Carry My Pet, co-founded by Faisal Islam, says it is more expensive than human travel because "it is more than just booking a flight or train".

In India, approximately six out of ten people have a pet, and it can be a hassle to travel with them or to move to another city. Procedures are complex, and there is no clarity regarding costs. Several companies offer pet relocation services that take care of the paperwork, but the costs are separate. Pet transportation locally can cost anywhere from Rs 20,000 to Rs 60,000; international relocation services start from Rs 2 lakh and can go up to Rs 5 lakh," he says.

IATA-compliant crates for travel: No matter where pet parents relocate, they need an IATA-certified crate to keep their pets safe during their trip. You can expect to pay anywhere between Rs 5,000 and Rs 40,000 depending on the size of your pet.

When it comes to domestic relocation, you must have your pet's medical records and vaccination details on hand. There are many documents required for international transportation. You must have all of these certificates, from rabies titer tests to vaccination records, and even microchipping. The cost of each varies. You can get these certificates from pet relocation companies for a fee, though. Such companies are preferred by many pet parents.

While you can move your pet within the country by air, rail, or road, airlines are the preferred means. In addition to being fast, it is inherently safe. However, it is expensive. It is critical your pet travels on a pet-friendly flight, as the airplane ticket makes up the bulk of the cost.

Rail transportation is one of the less explored modes of transportation. It is, however, one of the most affordable. If you travel by train with your pet, either book the entire trip or have a confirmed ticket along with permission from fellow passengers. If the transportation is from an unconnected location or a remote area, then driving is preferable. The average cost per mile is between Rs 15 and Rs 25.
