As the mercury rises and summer temperatures start to sizzle, it's important to keep our furry friends cool and comfortable. The Capital Area Humane Society has some great tips on how to beat the heat and keep your pet safe this summer.

First, always make sure your pet has access to plenty of fresh, clean water. A good rule of thumb is to provide one water bowl per pet, and to refill the bowls several times a day. If you'll be away from home for more than a few hours, consider investing in a pet water fountain or automatic water dispenser.

Second, create a cool, comfortable environment for your pet, both indoors and out. Indoor pets should have access to a cool, shady spot to rest, and outdoor pets should have a shady, well-ventilated area to escape the sun. If your home doesn't have air conditioning, consider installing a window fan or setting up a portable air conditioner in your pet's area.

Finally, never leave your pet in a parked car, even for just a few minutes. The temperature inside a parked car can quickly climb to dangerous levels, even on a relatively cool day. If you're traveling with your pet, make sure to bring along plenty of water and a cool, shady spot for rest stops.

By following these simple tips, you can help your pet stay cool and safe all summer long.

If you're like most people, your four-legged friends are an important part of your family. And, just like the rest of your family, you want to make sure they're safe and comfortable during the dog days of summer.

Here are some tips from the Capital Area Humane Society on how to keep your furry friends cool:

- Make sure they have access to fresh, cool water at all times.

- Provide them with a shady spot to rest during the hottest hours of the day.

- Avoid taking them on long walks or runs during the heat of the day.

- If they must be outside, keep them on a leash and monitor them closely for signs of heat exhaustion, such as excessive panting or drooling.
